Just One Night

I just want to share a film I watched a couple of weeks back. It’s called Before Sunrise, and it was realeased in 1995. It’s a quiet, moving, and deeply romantic film. The plot couldn’t get any simpler: man meets woman, they only get one night together, they go their separate ways the next morning. In that one night, they talked about life, love, and everything in between. The film is almost entirely made up of just conversation, yet I never got bored throughout the whole movie because I found myself, every now and then, remembering real-life conversations I’ve had with more or less the same thoughts.

There’s a real-time sequel to this movie called Before Sunset, released in 2004 and is just about as good as this one. Oh and by the way, this film scores 100% in Rotten Tomatoes so I guess that totally means this is a must-see.

Let me share some random lines quoted from the movie.

• I know happy couples. But I think they lie to each other.
• Why does everyone think conflict is so bad? There’s a lot of good things coming out of conflict.
• People always talk about how love is this totally unselfish, giving thing, but if you think about it, there’s nothing more selfish.
• You know what’s the worst thing about somebody breaking up with you? It’s when you remember how little you thought about the people you broke up with, and you realize that that is how little they’re thinking about you. You’d like to think that you’re both in all this pain, but really, they’re just, “Hey, I’m glad you’re gone.“
• But loving someone, and being loved means so much to me. We always make fun of it and stuff. But isn’t everything we do in life a way to be loved a little more?
